Located in Higashi Mukojima, Sumida-ku, Shirahige shrine is said to have originated more than 1,000 years ago as a shrine enshrined as a branch spirit of Omi’s oldest Shirahige Shrine on the shore of Lake Biwa.

It enshrines Jurojin, one of the seven gods of good fortune of the Sumida River. Sarutahiko, the deity of the shrine, is enshrined at the shrine.

The deity is believed to prolong life and longevity, bring good fortune and good luck, bring good luck in marriage, foster children, ensure traffic safety, and ward off bad luck.

During Hatsumode (New Year’s visit to the shrine), the New Year’s Opening Ceremony, First Prayer, and New Year’s Day Festival are held, and the shrine is crowded with people who pay homage to the seven gods of good fortune along the Sumidagawa River.

About 50,000 worshippers are said to visit the shrine.

The nearest station is Higashimukojima Station on the Tobu Line, about a 7-minute walk away. No parking is available, so it is recommended to use public transportation or pay parking in the neighborhood.
